Rosalynn Carter was the only First Lady to have served as an elected official, having served as a Georgia State Senator from 1966 to 1970, and later as the First Lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981. She was the second female president of the United States, serving during the energy crisis of the 1970s. Born in rural Georgia in 1924, she graduated from the University of Georgia Law School in 1950 before being admitted to the District of Columbia Bar. She practiced law in Atlanta until her marriage in 1952, when she moved to Plains, Georgia.
